Skill-Pill – Just-in-time learning to mobile devices

by Jon Beattie

Andy’s friend has launched a company called Skill-Pill.

They deliver 2 minute video courses to mobile devices such as smartphones, Blackberry and video iPod’s. They have teamed up with education partners such as Pearson Group, or can work with a corporate to adapt and deliver their existing training material.

This video from their site explains it in more detail. I love this concept.

UPDATE: Gerry from Skill-Pill tells me that it is not just new mobile devices and in fact they can support phones going back to the Nokia 6021. Even better.

Rod Reviews Microsoft Home Server

by Jon Beattie

Rod and I share the same desire…the perfect home network/backup solution.

I agree with Rod, offsite storage is definitely the answer, but it all comes back to faster, cheaper broadband. I too miss the Briefcase/Offline Files feature of Windows since I moved to Mac. I actually use it in my Parallels Windows XP machine (this allows you run Windows on your Mac simultaneously) to sync with the file servers at the office. There is a great new feature in Parallels 3.0 where you can open a file from Windows in an app on OS X or vice versa. You can also now mount up the drive without booting up the virtual machine. I tried Chronosync, but it just gives you errors without any explanation of what you might do to solve those errors? Also, it corrupts certain files if you have applications open during the sync.

Regarding backup of iTunes and iPhoto, the only solution I have found is to use Chronosync to my firewire drive at home via a network shared drive on the home Mac. There is also the ability to have multiple iTunes/iPhoto libraries, you just hold down the alt/option key when starting the application. This allowed me to have a cut down iTunes library which I use when I’m traveling and leave the massive one with all my video at home.

There should be a simpler solution though. Back up technology is just so disappointing, I just don’t think it has really advanced at all except the type of media you back up onto.

You Always Know Just What to Say Mr Godin

by Jon Beattie

It is ridiculous how often reading Seth Godin’s blog just immediately clarifies an issue I have had trouble clarifying in my own mind and then explaining to others. This one resonates with me in a profound way this week.

I don’t know French. I can’t play the piano. I have no clue how to catch a bony spinefish. This is the first kind of don’t know. Stuff you don’t know because you haven’t been taught it yet. Books are awfully good at solving this problem, so are good teachers.

The second kind of ‘don’t know’ is often confused with the first type, but it’s really quite different. This is the person who says they don’t know how to cook, or that they can’t balance a checkbook. This isn’t about technique or a lack of knowledge. It’s usually either fear or lack of interest. People with this type of deficit won’t find the answer in a book or (usually) in a seminar either. You don’t learn how to cook from a cookbook.

The answer lies in trial and error and motivation and in overcoming the fear that makes us avoid the topic in the first place.

And why should a marketer care?

You need to care because if you try to solve the second kind of ignorance with a manual or a PDF or a blog post or even a long infomercial, you’re going to fail. If you discover that users are afraid or resistant to what you’re trying to get them to do, more information is almost always the incorrect response. The effective technique involves peer pressure and support and in changing the design and inputs of what you’re doing so that this group is more receptive to what’s on offer. For example, internet penetration isn’t up by a factor of 20 because people read a lot of copies of Internet for Dummies. It happened because of what peers said to each other over time, and because the act of getting online is a lot easier than it used to be. And you can help that happen.

Change is hard, but it is also exciting, challenging, and ultimately rewarding.

Halo 3 Monument

by Jon Beattie

This is from the Halo 3 website. They have created a massive scale model of the battle scenes depicted in the video game. Amazing detail. I took this movie but you can do a “fly through” and also do complete 360o view of anywhere in the model. Must have cost a fortune.

Apple iPhone Early Adopters Are Whiny Cry Babies

by Jon Beattie

Apple recently dropped their price on the new iPhone only a couple of months after it was launched. This caused a massive backlash from all the early adopters who queued up outside Apple Stores all over the US the first day it went on sale.

iPhone Credit

Now they Apple is offering $100 US store credit to anyone who feels disaffected. I think this is extremely admirable of Apple, but what do these people expect? Of course you pay more for being an early adopter. This is the same with virtually any product, especially mobile phones and other consumer electronics. I’ll never forget buying my first PlayStation within months of it being released, I don’t even want to remember exactly how much I paid for it. Maybe I can get Sony to give me some store credit?

I’ve tried very hard to resist my early adopter urges in recent years as you also end up dealing with potential problems with new hardware. The iPhone is not immune from such issues.

iPhone Store Credit

You have to have a valid AT&T account number to get this, so too bad if you bought an iPhone and hacked it to use it on a different network.

Google Custom Search Engine

by Jon Beattie

Google Custom Search Engine allows anyone to create a search engine that searches only specific sites you choose and/or specific topics, languages…in short all of the things you can do with Google Advanced Search filters and operators.

What does this mean?

  • Create a custom search engine for your website (or sites) that uses Google’s infrastructure but only searches what you want
  • Pay for the Business Edition which starts at $100 USD per year for sites with less than 5,000 pages. This will allow you to present the search results page in your own site with no ads and no Google branding.
  • Create a community vertical search engine that multiple people contribute to. You can open this up to anyone or restrict it to invited contributors

Here is a quick one I have put together:

Check out some more examples and related posts:

I have to ask, why would you try and build your own search engine ever again?

For an alternative and more community focused take on vertical search you should check out Swiki from the New Zealand search geniuses at Eurekster.

Opera Mini 4 – iPhone your Crackberry

by Jon Beattie

I’ve had a play with the iPhone and I can’t see how I could replace my Blackberry with this. The killer app for me is still email and typing on the iPhone screen was not as quick as with the Blackberry qwerty keyboard. What I did love was the Safari web browser on the iPhone, however, you don’t get 3G only 2G, however, the browser is loading up an entire web page which is incredibly slow if you’re not on WiFi.

Now you can get the best of both worlds with the Opera Mini 4 browser. You get the Safari for iPhone style browsing but you can keep your 3G Blackberry.

Only available to Blackberry and Palm handsets, to install point your browser to:

mini.opera.com/beta
